How to Prepare Your Deck for Spring

As many of us are looking forward to warmer weather and spending time outside, we also need to make sure that the regular spring deck maintenance is done so that we can get the most out of it during the spring and summer months ahead.

Here are some useful tips:

Clear away winter debris

It is important to clear any leftover dirt, grime and mould that have accumulated on your deck over the winter.

Inspect your deck

Take some time to thoroughly inspect your deck and note what needs to be repaired or replaced. If possible, take a look underneath your deck paying special attention to the joists and posts. Check the boards for cracking, warping or splinters and repair or replace damaged ones.  Don’t forget to check stairs and banisters. Check for any raised nail or screw heads and make them flush with the surface again.

Clean Your Deck

Clean the deck thoroughly to remove embedded dirt, fungus and stains with a deck cleaner of your choice. Fountain Store stocks a number of suitable deck cleaning products or you can make your own using half water half bleach solution.

Apply with a stiff brush and then rinse with a hose.

If you are using a pressure washer make sure you test a small area first to avoid damaging your decking.

Cleaning the deck is not just about appearance.  The prolonged presence of grime and water on the surface of your deck can accelerate rotting and deterioration.

Seal and Protect

Always wait 48 hours after washing before sealing with a protective finish.

You may want to use a semi-transparent stain to enhance your deck's appeal, or a transparent finish to let the natural wood colour and texture show through.

Even if you are not sure that you want to stain your deck, it is important to protect it with water repellent.  Water repellents stop rain from penetrating the wood surface, which can cause swelling, shrinking, warping and cracking.
